The region first came into being on October 1, 2016, with the decision to merge the former Aquitaine, Poitou-Charentes and Limousin regions. Bordeaux is the administrative centre. Today, with its 12 ‘départements’, Nouvelle-Aquitaine is the largest region of France in terms of area and tourism – still a versatile dream destination for all in search of French authenticity in the south-west.
