Holiday paradise in the nature reserve park

Pugnochiuso is located in the south-eastern part of the Gargano peninsula which was declared a protected nature reserve in 1991. This is one the most extensive and diverse parks in Italy, and even in Europe, with its 120,000 hectares and twelve different ecosystems. Its 150km-long coast line, with cliffs, beaches and impenetrable mixed woodland, the Foresta Umbra, inspire nature enthusiasts from all over the world. The medieval pilgrimage destinations at San Giovanni Rotondo and Monte Sant‘Angaelo as well as the many Roman, Daunian and Norman-Staufen sites provide impressive testimonies of the region’s eventful history. Culinary delights such as fish and shellfish, locally-produced olive oil and wine, cheese and sausage from the mountains, and lots of local fruit and vegetables are specialities awaiting visitors. The best way to discover the natural treasures of Gargano is on foot or by bike and you can relax with a refreshing swim at one of the many breathtakingly beautiful bathing coves.

About the region

Throughout its eventful history, Apulia has been the home of many peoples: the Athenians, the Romans, Byzantines, Normans, the Hohenstaufens and the Anjou lineage settled here.  All the various cultures are present in Apulia and menhirs, temple ruins, sunken churches, castles, baroque and Romanesque cathedrals, palaces, ancient villages and cities, all bear witness to the treasures of changing cultures. Three UNESCO Heritage Sites are among the highlights: Castel del Monte, Kaiser Friedrich II’s fortress near Andria, the Trulli dry-stone houses at and around Alberobello and the San Michele Arcangelo sanctuary, in Monte Sant'Angelo, with pilgrimage sites and masterpieces of medieval art. Apulia is magic! History becomes one with the present, and traditions are still tangible everywhere. Holy saints’ day ceremonies full of colour and light, harvest festivals and fishermen’s and craftsmen’s rituals, – customs are truly alive here. Apulia has lots to offer gastronomically too: natural, locally-produced ingredients, first-class olive oil or special types of wine well-known to connoisseurs.
